Is Your Business Ready for 2026? 4 Tech Decisions You Must Make Now

By Wavefinity | November 20, 2025

It is hard to believe, but we are officially staring down the barrel of 2026.

If you are like most business owners in Eagle County and Summit County, you are likely reviewing your P&L and wondering where the year went. The ski season is ramping up in Vail and Breckenridge, which means your focus is naturally shifting to operations and staffing.

However, before you finalize your budgets for next year, there is a major reality check we need to address.

The “tech safety net” just got a lot smaller.

Last month, on October 14, 2025, Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10. At the same time, cyber insurance carriers have tightened their grip on what they will and will not cover in 2026.

For businesses in the Vail Valley, the “wait and see” approach is no longer a strategy. It is a liability. To help you start 2026 on solid ground, here are the four critical tech decisions you need to make before the ball drops.

Decision #1: The “Windows 10 Hangover” (Keep or Replace?)

We are now one month past the Windows 10 End-of-Life date. If you still have machines running Windows 10 on your network in Avon, Edwards, Eagle,or Frisco, they are now unpatched.

This means Microsoft is no longer fixing security holes. Every day that passes, hackers find new vulnerabilities that will never be patched. This is a massive risk for any business handling credit cards or client data.

The Decision

You need to inventory your network immediately. Can these machines be upgraded to Windows 11? If not, they must be replaced or physically isolated from your network.

The Wavefinity Tip

Do not throw good money after bad. If a computer is more than four years old, replacing it is often cheaper than paying for labor to upgrade it. This is especially true for high-use workstations in busy offices like those in Silverthorne or Gypsum where downtime kills productivity.

Decision #2: Will You Govern AI, or Let It Govern You?

In 2025, your employees likely started using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Microsoft Copilot. They are likely doing this whether you approved it or not. This is called “Shadow AI,” and it is a major data leak risk.

The Decision

You do not need to ban AI. In fact, AI can be a huge asset for businesses in Eagle and Dillon. However, you must have an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in place for 2026.

The Risk

Without a policy, an employee might accidentally paste sensitive client data or financial records into a public AI chatbot. Once that data is in, it is effectively public. We recommend setting clear rules now so your team knows exactly what is safe to share.

Decision #3: The Cyber Insurance “Price of Admission”

Have you looked at your cyber insurance renewal questionnaire yet? The requirements for 2026 have shifted.

Two years ago, having simple antivirus software was enough. Today, insurers protecting businesses in high-risk areas like Summit County are demanding significantly more.

  1. EDR (Endpoint Detection & Response): Traditional antivirus is not enough anymore.
  2. Enforced MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication): Not just on email, but on everything.
  3. Incident Response Plans: Written proof of what you will do if you get hacked.

The Decision

Audit your security stack against your insurance policy now. If you check “Yes” on a form but do not actually have the tech installed, your claim could be denied in the event of a breach.

Decision #4: Moving from “Break/Fix” to “Strategic Growth”

Inflation has hit SaaS (software) prices hard this year. If your IT budget for 2026 is just “what we spent in 2025 plus 5%,” you are going to run out of money by August.

Many businesses in Vail, Silverthorne and Keystone are seeing price hikes of 15% to 20% on their core software tools.

The Decision

Stop budgeting for repairs and start budgeting for results. A Business Technology Review can help you consolidate expensive software licenses you are not using. You can then reinvest that money into security that actually lowers your risk.
